Preschool Curriculum Overivew

At Mount Kelly International Preschool, we follow the British National Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum for Nursery (K1) and Reception (K2).

Using an integrated approach to learning through play, teachers plan activities that cover one or all of the 7 learning areas of the EYFS. Click here for the curriculum overview of the EYFS.

Upper Reception (K3) 

In Upper Reception the Year 1 English National curriculum is delivered using a play-based and activity-based approach and is tailored to meet the needs of international pupils. Click here for the Upper Reception curriculum overview for 2018-2019.
 

Chinese Language

Mandarin classes are blended into the children’s daily environment. Each day, our native-speaking Chinese teacher leads a Chinese language class. In addition, the teacher works together with the class teachers to deliver Mandarin language, reading and writing games, and cultural activities for the pupils to access in rotation.

Storytelling and story reading, as well as various play activities create a fun, rich and anxiety-free language environment, which stimulates children’s interest and creativity.
 

Assessment for Learning 

Assessment is ongoing. The everyday process of teaching and learning necessitates ongoing assessment for learning, as teachers observe and record children’s skills, knowledge and attitudes throughout each school day.

Portfolio
Documentation of the learning and development of each child is made through regular formal and informal observations, discussions, records of conversations and children’s work.

Evidence towards the completion of the EYFS Profile is compiled throughout and is passed on to the next teacher at the end of each year. Each individual child’s profile supports teachers in planning the next steps for their development in the 7 learning areas, and is communicated to parents regularly, as well as at our twice-yearly parents’ consultation meetings.

Reports
The Autumn and Summer Term Reports include details of the child’s characteristics of learning and a written summary of the child’s attainments against the ELGs, stating whether your child is:

·       Meeting expected levels of development (expected)

·       Exceeding expected levels or, (exceeding)

·       Not yet reaching expected levels (emerging)

We anticipate that most preschool pupils will reach standards above those expected for their age. Sometimes, children may experience ongoing difficulties. The school always discusses these difficulties with parents, and extra support can be offered in the form of resources, additional ideas of how to support learning and development at home, or referral to external agencies.
