Curriculum at the Preschool

At Mount Kelly International Preschool and Nursery School, we follow the English National Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum.

EYFS is comprised of three year groups:

  • Foundation Stage 1 (ages 3-4) (K1)
  • Foundation Stage 2 (ages 4-5) (K2)
  • Foundation Stage 3 (ages 5-6) (K3)

THE EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE

Our international preschool delivers the seven areas of learning through a play-based curriculum using the 2017 Statutory Framework and the 2020 Statutory Framework. We also follow Development Matters, which sets out the learning goals the students need to attain throughout the early years.

EYFS understand that every child is unique, and they grow through positive experiences in an enabling environment. Every child develops and learns in different ways, and being a school with small class sizes (1:8 teacher-child Ratio), we can easily cater to this.

The EYFS framework is used to focus on seven key areas primarily aimed for Foundation 1 & 2.

PRIME AREAS OF THE EYFS FRAMEWORK

The Prime Areas are for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

  1. Physical Development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control and movement. This is for both their fine motor skills and gross motor skills. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity and to make healthy choices in relation to food. A specialised teacher is allocated for these lessons.
  2. Communication and Language development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves, listening and communicating in different situations.
  3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others, to form positive relationships, to develop respect for others, to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings. They also understand appropriate behaviour in groups and have confidence in their own abilities.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF THE EYFS FRAMEWORK

We also support children in the Specific Areas, through which the prime areas are strengthened and applied.

  1. Literacy involves encouraging children to link/blend sounds/letters to begin to read and write. Children have access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to spark their interest. We follow the Read Write Inc curriculum for this.
  2. Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems and to describe shapes, spaces, and measure. We follow the White Rose curriculum for this.
  3. Understanding the World involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.
  4. Expressive Arts and Design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, design and technology. A specialised teacher is allocated for these lessons.

FOUNDATION STAGE 3 (FS3)

At Mount Kelly International Preschool, FS3 students are extended with their learning to ensure they have completed the FS2 targets and allow them to progress further. Students that join our FS3 class will move into our Year 1 class in the Primary school in the following
